Himawari is a Japanese word for sunflower, or “bunga matahari” in Indonesian. This spring/ summer feminine sock adopted the stitch pattern from the Himawari shawl. Solid and semi-solid yarn will look best with the lace pattern.
DIFFICULTY
Intermediate. Chart reading, lace knitting, basic stitches, increasing and decreasing, and cuff-down sock construction abilities are required.
SIZE
To fit foot circumference 9” / 23cm.
MATERIALS
YARN
Papiput Supersoft Sock
85% superwash merino wool, 15% nylon, 400 meters per 100 grams. Fingering weight. One skein.
[Substitute]
Papiput Tough Sock
75% superwash merino wool, 25% nylon, 400 meters per 100 grams. Fingering weight. One skein.
The sample is knitted in the Mentega colorway.
NEEDLES
1 set of US-1.5 / 2.5 mm double-pointed needles or one pair of 32” / 80 cm long circular needles for a magic loop method or size to obtain the correct gauge.
NOTIONS
5 stitch markers: one piece in a different color or shape of stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round, and four other stitch markers (optional) will be used to mark the lace motif.
Tapestry needle for grafting the toe stitches.
GAUGE
Approximately 14 sts x 18 rows = 2 x 2” / 5 x 5cm in Stockinette stitch in the round, blocked, relaxed. It is acceptable if you cannot find a similar gauge because sock yarn is naturally flexible, and this design is lacy. I am a tight knitter. If you are a loose knitter, please use one size down from the suggested needles.
This pattern has been tested and tech-edited.
